About meningitis ACWY

Meningitis is the swelling of the membrane that covers the brain and the spinal cord.This membrane is commonly known as meninges. Meningitis ACWY is a form of bacterial meningitis which can be transmitted by getting into close contact with an infected person or animal.

Young people at the age of 15-24 are more likely to contact the disease ,however,infants below 1 year, people taking care of N.menigitis isolates and people living in a community with meningitis outbreak can alos contact Meningitis. The symptoms of Meningitis ACWY are similar to those of flu and may include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, confusion and drowsiness. You may also see rahses on the skin a health problem known as meningococcal septicamia.

The meningitis ACWY vaccine is used to protect you from four types of Meningococcal bacteria.This types of bacteria are type A,C,W and Y.

The vaccine is given as a single injection in your upper arm .Majority of people get the vaccine once but some get a booster after every 5 years if their job exposes too the disease.Before your departure,ensure to book an appointment with your pharmacist to get the vaccine administered.

 

How can you get meningitis ACWY?

Meningitis can be spread through respiratory droplets and secretion coming from the carriers. Coughing,kissing and sneezing are some of the wats respiratory droplets and secretions sprrad and contact meningitis disease. Also attending mass gatherings where there are meningitis carries can cause the spread of the disease . Living with the disease carrier for a prolonged period of time may alsoo put you at risk of contacting the disease .Teenagers between the age of 14 and 16 get meningococcal ACWY vaccine in school through immunisation programs .This protects them from getting infected with the bacteria

What are the symptoms of Meningitis ACWY?

If you are having meningogoccal disease,you will first experience a bad flu that gets worse fast.You need to seek medical attention immedietly to save ypur life.Other symptoms you may experience include:

  • headache
  • vomiting
  • stiff neck
  • muscle and joint pain
  • high temperature
  • cold hands and feet
  • drowsiness or difficulty waking up

You may also have a rash that purple bruise like rash that doesn't fade quickly after touching or pressing .

If you notice any of the symptoms in a child or adult,seek medical advice immediatley.The doctor may recommend eary treatments such as use of antibiotics.

At what age should teenagers and young people have the meningitis ACWY vaccine?

Children aged 13 to 15 (school Years 9 or 10) must get MenACWY vaccine in school.Young people in colleges and universisties where the diseases can spread quickly should get vaccinated before or within age 25.

 
Can university students have the meningitis ACWY vaccine?

Any university student born on or after 1 September 1996 who was eligible but missed their teenage MenACWY vaccine can still have it up to their 25th birthday.

Students going to university or college for the first time, including overseas and mature students who have not yet had the MenACWY vaccine, remain eligible, as freshers (first-year students), up to their 25th birthday.

Students should contact their GP to have the MenACWY vaccine before starting university or college. If that's not possible, they should have it as soon as they can after they begin university.

Why should teenagers and students have the MenACWY vaccine?

Teenagers and studensts should get MenACWY vaccine because of the high population in universities and colleges.Interacting in this premises puts them at higher risk of infection since some of their collegues may unknowingly be carrying the meningococcal bacteriaat the back of their nose or throat.

Anyone eligible for the MenACWY vaccine should have it, even if they have previously had the MenC vaccine.

The MenACWY vaccine is highly effective in preventing illness caused by the four meningococcal strains, including the extremely harmful MenW strain.

What are the side effects of the MenACWY vaccine?
  • The MenACWY vaccine can cause side effects like all vaccines, but they are generally mild and last for a short period.

    The most common side effects seen in teenagers and young people are:

    • redness
    • hardening and itching at the injection site
    • a high temperature (above 38C)
    • headache
    • feeling sick (nausea) and
    • tiredness (fatigue)

    These symptoms should last no longer than 24 hours.

    Sometimes a small, painless lump develops, but this usually disappears after a few weeks.

How do I get a meningitis certificate?

In our pharmacy,you will get a certificated valid for 5 years after getting your vaccination.Most countries ussually ask for a meningitis ACWY certificate before getting in their country.

How long before travelling should I have the vaccination?

Each country has its rules regarding vaccination.For example in Saudi Arabia you should get vaccinated 10 days before your arrival to the country.Do enough research before getting to your place of visit.

Do I need a booster for the meningitis ACWY vaccine?

Booster is important after every five years.The vaccine protects you from meningococcal strains A, C, W and Y for five years.
